SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Centres from The FA Offer Uckfield girls the chance to play
SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Centres from The FA will provide girls aged 5-11 in Uckfield and the surrounding area, with regular opportunities to play football. The initiative offers organised sessions in a fun and engaging environment created exclusively for girls. More than 200 clubs were piloted across England in 2017 and the scheme is now being extended to more than 900 centres with 26,000 participants across the country.
SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football sessions take place on a weekly basis, either after school or at weekends, and provide a safe environment where girls can try football for the first time. SSE and The FA hope the initiative will inspire participants to engage with football, meet new friends, develop fundamental skills, learn new things and create the foundation for a lifelong love of football.
Sessions in Uckfield start from 11th April include:
- A - Wednesday Evening 6-7 PM, Uckfield 3G Pitch (Ages 5-8)
- B - Wednesday Evening 7-8 PM, Uckfield 3G Pitch (Ages 9-11)

Each SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Centre will be run in conjunction with local County FAs and utilise qualified coaches and local facilities. As well as activities for girls, there will also be opportunities for attending parents, carers and siblings to engage with the sport at the same time through ‘Family Sessions’ including Soccercise and Walking football.
The initiative is in line with The FA’s Gameplan for Growth, with the target of doubling girls’ participation in the sport by 2020. The strategy for women’s and girls’ football at grassroots level includes initiatives alongside SSE Wildcats, such as FA Girls’ Football Week.
Development Officer & Wildcats Administrator Paul Fletcher said: To be selected to run a SSE Wildcats Centre is a huge coup for the club and illustrates the hard work the club is doing to allow Football for All, but also demonstrates our commitment to getting more girls playing a sport including Football. Since we launched Girls Football within the club, the numbers have grown and grown and we now have an active group of players in multiple ages, training weekly and playing matches in varying leagues. This is testament to the coaching standards we adhere to, but also how we make our sessions challenging, engaging, but most importantly fun and enjoyable. We can’t wait to start Wildcats and welcome new players along as they start their journey into sport..
Uckfield Grasshoppers scores prestigious FA ‘Development Club’ standard
The Uckfield Grasshoppers Junior Football Club, whose main sponsor is local firm TR Fastenings (TR), has been rewarded with a special and hard to come by accreditation by Sussex FA.
The club has been upgraded to Charter Standard Development Club, the second of three chartered standards available to UK FA Affiliated grass roots football clubs. The next goal is to progress to the final tier of the Charter Standard tree by achieving 'Community Club’ status.
Part of this upgrade has also seen the club win Sussex FA's ‘Development Club of the Year’. The recognition has been achieved as a result of the club’s commitment to ‘enhancing the quality and scope of its football offering’, according to the Sussex FA. This reflects Grasshoppers’ commitment to coaching and nurturing its 350 members, who range in age from 4 to 16. The management team and coaches have engaged regularly with Sussex FA to strengthen and develop its processes and offering, creating a clear pathway to further success.
Now adorned with ‘development’ status, the club is looking to continue to grow, and is hoping to introduce under 17, under 18 and under 20 teams in the future. The club have successfully introduced Futsal as an additional football development tool and are looking at building on their flourishing girls’ football scheme. It remains committed to high standards in coaching, with all coaching staff receiving regular and consistent FA training to allow them to progress up the ranks as well as benefitting from in-house support from their mentoring scheme. Other developments for the club include the introduction of a youth forum, whereby the young members can submit ideas and become involved in coaching, developing and shaping the direction of the club, as well as disability football. Grasshoppers have committed themselves to the Sussex FA’s Disability Pledge to introduce and raise awareness of Disability Football in the local community.
Paul Fletcher, football development officer at the Uckfield Grasshoppers, says: “This is a fantastic achievement for the club, our staff and our members, who have all worked incredibly hard to reach and maintain the high standards needed to gain this accreditation. We are so proud to be part of the grass roots football movement in this country, and with the support of our members, TR, and Sussex FA we know we can only get better and stronger in the future.”
Paul Standing, commercial products manager at TR Fastenings, adds: “As the largest employer and the biggest youth sports club in Uckfield respectively, the relationship between TR and the Grasshoppers is an ideal match. The club is incredibly passionate about providing its members with a valuable and high quality experience, and this FA standard is testament to that hard work and dedication. We congratulate everyone at the Grasshoppers on their phenomenal achievement and we are proud to stand alongside them as they strive for further success.”
Uckfield Grasshoppers Introduces Mentoring Scheme and Welcomes International Visitors
The Uckfield Grasshoppers Junior Football Club, whose main sponsor is local firm TR Fastenings, has introduced a mentor scheme to strengthen its training programme.
In the last few weeks the club’s coaches have been helping two young players who travelled all the way across the world to join them.
The Grasshoppers are taking advantage of the Football Association (FA)’s Coach Mentoring Programme, a major grassroots investment by the FA which reflects the view that development of coaches is central to the development of the game. This programme provides on-the-ground support to FA Charter Standard clubs and coaches and offers 50 hours of mentoring by an FA Club Mentor, providing targeted support to challenge coaches to excel in their work and enhance their coaching standards. This has enabled the Grasshoppers to enrol an FA Mentor, as well as appointing Paul Fletcher, Simon Heffer and Nick Bignell as ‘Legacy Mentors’ – club coaches trained to create a legacy within the club.
Nick Bignell said: “I can’t remember a time when one team’s training session was observed by five other coaches, all keen to ensure the best level of training is given across all of our age groups, from five to 16. These latest developments should really strengthen our methods and prove that we’re working hard to make the Club and our players more successful on and off the field.”
The club enjoyed further excitement recently when it welcomed six year old Finlay Reid-Maxwell and his eight year old brother Sorley, all the way from Australia. Their dad, Sandy, brought the boys to Uckfield to re-visit the club he fondly remembered from the days before he emigrated down under. Sandy first played for the Grasshoppers in 1981, the year it was founded, when it operated out of an old green hut on Victoria Playing Ground. Both the Grasshoppers and its sponsor, TR Fastenings – which at that time was operating out of a small converted industrial unit in Uckfield - have come a long way in the intervening 36 years.
TR Fastenings Supports Sussex Sixes Football Tournament
Uckfield Grasshoppers Football Club recently hosted the 26th Annual Sussex Sixes football tournament, with a total of 156 teams and 1,248 players attending over the two days. This year teams travelling from as far as Ipswich played in the U14 section and TR provided the car parking facilities for the event.
Two Uckfield Grasshopper teams met each other in the U14 semi-finals and the winning team went on to become runners-up after taking winners Forest Row to extra time in the final. The club is now looking forward to the 2016/17 season with much enthusiasm.
Vice-chairman Paul Standing commented: “This is our club’s only fundraiser and for a volunteer-run club, events such as this are an important part of what we do and enable us to keep our subscriptions low.
“We are very proud of having more than 350 members signed with us and will strive to move forward. On behalf of the committee, I thank everyone for all their support and look forward to welcoming everyone back next year.”
TR Fastenings has supported the Uckfield Grasshopppers for the past five years and has been the Club’s main sponsor since 2013, which coincided with the opening of their new all-weather pitch. Established in 1982, Uckfield Grasshoppers has over 350 members aged 5-16, and provides youngsters with the opportunity of playing football in a safe environment.
Main Sponsor TR Fastenings thanked for its ongoing support

It was also an opportunity to look back at some of the achievements that the club has made during the last year, including a number of league wins plus the Under 15’s momentous win of the Sussex Count Cup Final, the highest level cup competition that they can enter at this age.
During the evening each age group was called up on stage and given their medals to a slide show and music of their choice.
There was an additional presentation by Uckfield Grasshopper Vice Chairman Paul Standing detailing the start-up of a new 100 club has been introduced this year. The objective of this is to raise funds in order to create a safer environment for both their children and supporters to be in.
Grasshoppers have also joined forces with Uckfield Lions in order to fund the cost of a Defibrillator to be installed at their West Park ground, and announced during the evening that they are now the proud owners of a new jointly-funded machine, worth £1200.
The evening went without a hitch and over 300 children made the journey to the stage in order to receive their awards.
