Tennis ace Amelia has star turn on local radio
Amelia Devlin was interviewed by Uckfield FM along with her coach Greg Watson
Amelia Devlin, the 12-year-old Sussex tennis prodigy sponsored by TR Fastenings, enjoyed 15 minutes of fame this month after being interviewed live on air by local radio station Uckfield FM in its weekly Sports programme. This is the second interview that Amelia has given to the station, having been featured two years ago when she was just 10. Amelia, who is now no.2 in the county for her age group, spoke alongside her coach Greg Watson, and discussed her progress in training, her regular routine and her hopes for the future.
Greg has coached Amelia since she was 4, and he commented in the interview that it was when she was 8 or 9 that he realised she had the potential to go a very long way in the sport. She has now progressed from the softer ‘green ball’ to the more advanced ‘yellow ball’ and is ramping up her training as she prepares for the competitive season.
When asked what her plans were for the future, Amelia expressed her determination to continue her success, win many more tournaments, and reach the no.1 position in the county.
The full interview with Amelia and Greg is available to listen to on the Uckfield FM website here.
TR-backed tennis prodigy continues to shine
Amelia Devlin, 12, is currently no.2 in Sussex for her age-group
TR Fastenings is proudly continuing its sponsorships of Amelia Devlin, one of Sussex’s standout young tennis stars. Amelia, who is 12, is now ranked no.2 in the county for her age group. She started playing tennis when she was four and still has the same coach, training five times a week after school and competing regularly at a regional level. Amelia has now been placed onto a new coaching plan under the team at Brighton Virgin Active, led by Rhys Hanger, one of the most respected tennis coaches in the country.
Having won a tennis scholarship to Moira House School in Eastbourne, Amelia works hard to combine her sport with her studies and currently has a place on the county squad.. As part of her mentoring, she has been invited to the national tennis centre in Roehampton, near to the sport’s spiritual home at Wimbledon, where she has been assessed by tennis experts. She has also been given pointers by top coach Nigel Sears, father-in-law to British champion Andy Murray.
This summer, Amelia took part in the “Road to Wimbledon” tournament, in which talented young players from clubs across the country compete for the chance to play at Wimbledon. Amelia won her club tournament and went through to the county finals where she got to the final. She finished as runner up in the final against a powerful 14 year old opponent, but was praised for her progression to the finals and was invited to a Tim Henman tennis clinic at Wimbledon as part of her prize. Amelia is now starting to look to the future and is attending a talk later this month to learn about scholarships to American universities, which she can apply for when she is older.
Geoff Budd, European Managing Director at TR Fastenings, commented, “We are passionate about supporting local talent and it’s been an absolute pleasure to watch Amelia’s progress over the years; she’s achieved so much for someone so young and will no doubt continue to climb the ranks of the sport in the future.”
Amelia added “I feel very lucky to be able to spend so much time playing a sport I love, and I take every chance I can to get out on the court. I’m determined to get as far as I can in tennis and I really appreciate the support I get from my coaches, my family and my sponsors.”
Update June 2016
Amelia is continuing with her tennis training schedule – on court for a minimum of 8 hours a week – and has been representing her school in the U15 tennis team.
In a recent inter-school tournament, Amelia’s team triumphed over Seaford Head in the final for the Sussex Shield Plate competition, with Amelia being mentioned by several coaches for her impressive ground stroke winners.
Amelia is also a member of the Virgin Active Falmer U12 girls team. Playing singles and doubles, she has not lost a match so far this season. Often playing girls far bigger than her!
With the summer holidays fast approaching, Amelia will be able to increase her training and she has entered a number of tournaments in July and August.
TR Fastenings wish her all the best.

She has also seen success as part of her school team – winning the U11’s Sussex Schools’ Tennis Competition 2016. The team won all games played.

Young Sussex Tennis Talent Receives Support from TR Fastenings
TR Fastenings is delighted to be sponsoring rising young tennis player, Amelia Devlin, from Heathfield in East Sussex. Amelia started playing tennis when she was four and now aged ten competes regularly at both county and at regional level, has won numerous tournaments and dreams of one day winning Wimbledon.
Each week she has six hours of lessons and spends any spare time on the courts practising. In 2016 she will be progressing to using a yellow ball and is aiming to compete in several tournaments including Devonshire Park, Bromley, West Worthing, Tunbridge Wells and many more.
A member of three Sussex tennis clubs, East Hoathly, Cross-in-Hand and Virgin Active in Brighton, Amelia’s commitment and determination impress her coach Greg Watson. “Amelia is a natural athlete and has all the ingredients to become a top British player," he explains. “She is also extremely mature for her age and is totally prepared to make the necessary sacrifices required to succeed in this highly competitive sport.”
Rating Maria Sharapova, Caroline Wozniacki and Eugenie Bouchard as her heroes, Amelia’s passion for tennis is heartfelt. “I just love everything about the game, playing it, watching it, dreaming about it,” she says, adding “TR’s support means I can increase the number of lessons I have, which means that I will develop my game faster. It also helps me to buy sports clothes and equipment. This season I move up to playing with a yellow ball which I am really looking forward to, but the game will be tougher and I will need to carry more tennis rackets and also pay for re-stringing as it is more common for strings to go at this level.”
Glenda Roberts, TR's Group Sales Director commented, “It is important to nurture young British tennis talent, and despite her young age, Amelia has already demonstrated she has both the talent and the determination to succeed. We look forward to following her progress.”
