Newick Cricket Club welcomes huge crowds for Piers Morgan’s annual family day

Over 2000 spectators gathered at the King George V playing field in Newick on Sunday 2nd July for the annual Piers Morgan family day at Newick Cricket Club, where Piers is a member.

The former newspaper editor and TV presenter and his team of family, friends and celebrities played two matches against the Club, which is sponsored by TR Fastenings. This year, Piers’ special guests included cricketers Kevin Pietersen, Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff and Chris Gayle and footballer Robbie Savage.

The first match, against the Newick ‘Legends’ side, was played to ‘Barrington Rules’, with 15 overs a side, and the Piers Morgan XI enjoyed a comfortable win with a score of 102-41. The second match was played as a 20/20 against the Newick first XI and saw Freddie Flintoff make an impressive 50 from 18 balls. The Piers Morgan XI finished with a score of 192 for 4 wickets, before Newick retaliated with a valiant 184 for 4, losing out narrowly to the celebrity team. A highlight for the home side was Sam Carter’s 72 runs, which he made before being caught out by Freddie Flintoff.

The crowds were treated to glorious weather and Piers and his guests spent a lot of time talking to and signing autograph bats for the spectators and fans, which included Newick’s keen junior cricketers.

Geoff Budd, TR’s Europe managing director, who has family connections with Newick cricket club, said:

“Piers’ family day is a fabulous event which always attracts big crowds to Newick and the club in particular. It’s great for the young players and fans to meet their cricketing idols and to witness a fun and entertaining afternoon of cricket. The huge crowds and beautiful weather added to the occasion this year and ensured a fantastic time was had by all.”

TR Fastenings Continues Support of Newick Cricket Club

Club looks forward to 2017 season and participates in national scheme to nurture future cricket stars

Uckfield firm TR Fastenings (TR) is delighted to announce its continued support of Newick Cricket Club (NCC) throughout the 2017 season, which starts on 6th May. Sponsorship funds are vital in order to improve and maintain the club’s ground and equipment across both of its sites, the King George V playing field and Temple Grove. Newick CC is ‘Club Mark’ certified by the English Cricket Board (ECB) and has a number of senior and junior teams playing in the East Sussex leagues on Saturdays. The club also fields various teams for Sunday and mid-week fixtures.

This year the club is participating in a national initiative, All Stars Cricket, run by the ECB. The scheme aims to give children aged 5-8 a ‘great first experience in cricket’, providing a fun way for them to learn and develop their skills in a safe environment. The scheme kicks off in May to coincide with the 2017 season and will be delivered across England and Wales at over 1,500 fully accredited All Stars Cricket centres, including Newick CC.

TR has sponsored Newick CC since 2013, and the company’s logo is featured on the club’s stumps. Sponsorship money from TR and other supporters is put towards general running costs of the club, improving and maintaining the two sites, the pavilion and equipment including scoreboards and kit.

Geoff Budd, TR Europe’s managing director, commented: “We love lending our support to the local community and Newick Cricket Club is a fantastic example of an organisation which plays a hugely active role in the lives of its players and supporters. We are immensely proud to be involved with the club and look forward to cheering the teams on throughout the summer months.”

Malcolm Ward, Chairman of Newick CC, added: “Clubs such as ours rely on the support of local firms and individuals, and we are extremely grateful for the continued involvement of TR Fastenings and our other sponsors. It’s an exciting time for the club, with our senior and junior teams continuing to prosper in the leagues, and we are very proud to be playing an active role in the new All Stars initiative, which will bring in and nurture even more young talent to the club and the wider game of cricket.”

Piers Morgan 2016 match

Howzat! TR Fastenings congratulates Piers Morgan and Newick for a Superb Sunday of Sport

On Sunday 3rd July Newick Cricket Club hosted the Annual Piers Morgan family match. The teams comprised Piers and his family along with a number of celebrities playing one match of 15/15 against Newick Legends and another against Newick 1st team.

We were fortunate this year to have as Piers’ guests: Kevin Peterson, Michael Vaughan, Mark Austin and Susanna Reid. Kevin also came with his brother Bryan, who although not as well-known is a good cricketer in his own right.

In the first match against the Newick Legends, Piers’ team made 116 for 8 in their 15 overs, with Bryan Peterson scoring the highest with 28. Newick’s best bowler was Cameron Jones, 2 for 26, who also coaches Newick’s juniors on a Friday night, and Richard Manning 2 for 20. In reply, Newick Legends made 112 for 7, thereby losing by the small margin of 4 runs.

During the tea interval the celebrities signed autograph bats and chatted with some of the spectators. The cricket tea was provided by Piers’ mother, sister and team, and was commented highly on by players and guests.

In the second match, Kevin Peterson was out caught for 2, while Michael Vaughan took the Newick bowlers to task with a magnificent 141 not out off 66 balls, with 11 sixes and 12 fours. It was batting like this that spectators came to see. Piers’ team made 192 for 3 off their 20 overs. In reply, Newick batsmen were not able to compete with the number of 6s and boundaries that Michael Vaughan hit but Newick’s 1st Captain Scott Warren did his best and finished on 88 Not Out. Matt Sawyer’s 44 helped Scott to keep up with the run rate but they lost by 10 runs which was very good considering the power hitting of Michael Vaughan. Mark Austin was the best of Piers’ bowlers with 2 for 18.

A raffle was held in Aid of Headway, Newick Cricket Club’s sponsored charity, and the Club, and raised an impressive £245 for each.

“We are very grateful to Piers for asking his guests if they would be willing to play, as it encourages the younger generation to play cricket,” comments David Strachan, Newick’s Chairman. “Clubs around the country rely on their junior sections to replace players who are at the other end of their cricketing careers and days like this are the life blood of a club.”

TR Fastenings Continues to Support Newick Cricket Club

Piers Morgan to host annual family & friends cricket match at club on Sunday 3rd July.

TR Fastenings is delighted to be supporting Newick Cricket Club, the fourth year it has been a corporate sponsor. A highlight of the season will take place on Sunday 2nd July, when Piers Morgan, the club’s most famous member, hosts his annual family & friends match, facing the Newick side on home turf.  Piers’ team will include cricketers Kevin Peterson and Michael Vaughan, as well as ITV news star Mark Austin.

The event is being held at the King George V playing fields in Newick from 2.00pm onwards and there will be a Bar and BBQ available. All are welcome to come along and support.

TR Fastenings’ sponsorship has helped to improve and maintain the ground and equipment in first class condition, necessary for a Club that holds Division 1 status. Playing in the East Sussex Cricket League, Newick CC is a successful, popular village club, with 4 senior teams and thriving junior teams.

TR Fastenings has been a Corporate Sponsor of the Club since 2013, and over the last couple of years the funds received from TR and three other Sponsors have enabled a variety of works to take place such as upgrading the pavilion at Templegrove, repairs to the sightscreen and slip catcher, upgrading the scorebox at King George V Playing Field and installing a repeater board so scores are more visible.

At a time when some cricket clubs are reducing the number of teams they field, Newick is fortunate to have loyal sponsors and volunteers who are keen to give the talented younger players the opportunity to play the game.

Geoff Budd, TR’s Managing Director commented: “Nurturing talent and encouraging participation in the sport with a younger generation will help secure the future of the Club and its continued success. We are proud of our association with the Club and delighted that our financial support is helping to keep the Club in tip top shape in preparation for a busy summer ahead.”

Newick Cricket Club Update May 2016

The first League matches started this Saturday 7th May. We have had three friendly matches so far and won them all so that is a good start to the season.

Keep up to date on all the results here.

There are also three junior teams playing League cricket during the week so hopefully they will be the future of the club as the more senior players retire.

The problem has been for clubs with no Junior section have to either hope cricketers move into their area or they poach from other clubs, but with the help of your sponsorship together with a number of others we are able to put our younger senior players on coaching courses and thereby attract the 8 to 15 year olds into cricket by giving them proper training.
