TR-sponsored Police teams set sights on success at global indoor football competition

TR Fastenings (TR) is getting ready to cheer on two Metropolitan Police (Met) football teams who are competing at the World Police Indoor Soccer Tournament in October 2017. The teams, who are sponsored by TR and will wear the company logo on their kit throughout the competition, leave the UK on the 9th October.

The five-a-side competition will be held at the Marveld Resort recreational park in Groenlo in the Netherlands, just 25 miles south of TR’s office in Oldenzaal. The competition has evolved over the last 35 years to include firefighters, military personnel, and other individuals responsible for the safety of others, and now attracts more than 200 teams from 54 countries from all over the world.

TR is sponsoring members of the Met’s Sutton branch, who are travelling to the event for the 8th consecutive year and entering two categories: Men’s and Men’s over 45s. The tournament sees each team competing in 16 minute games, firstly in a group stage, and then in knockout rounds before the finals decide the winners of the coveted tournament trophies.  Before the competition, there is a parade of all competing countries, where teams display police memorabilia and equipment such as cars and uniforms.

The Men’s team includes PC Dean Reynolds, who used to work at TR and whose mother Kate Pocock still works at the Uckfield office as a business development manager. As well as sponsoring the kit, TR will also provide branded gifts including caps and back scratchers to be included in the traditional gift bags exchanged by teams before every match. In addition to the TR gifts, the Met teams will also be giving their opponents traditional British police whistles, in a nod to the far-reaching history of their profession.

Dean commented: “We are really excited to be setting off to the tournament again; this is my third year and it’s always fantastic to meet, play football and socialise with fellow Police officers from around the world. The chance to see other forces, witness their traditions and get together on the pitch is unique and one that we see as a real privilege. It’s thanks to the support and funding we receive from TR and others that we are able to attend this great event and we hope we can do them proud this year!”

Mark Belton, CEO of TR Fastenings’ parent company Trifast PLC, comments: “As a company we are fiercely passionate about supporting any initiative which champions teamwork and community spirit and this tournament is a fantastic example of both of those things. The success of our own business is largely down to the global network of teams we have across the world and it’s brilliant to be able to be associated with this event which also brings people together from all over the world. We wish the teams the best of luck and will be following their progress every step of the way!”

PC Mark Towler, who has been organising the Sutton teams’ involvement for the last eight years and plays in the Men’s over 45s team, says: “We’ve had an overwhelming response this year from people wanting to join our squads, and 2017 will see us taking our biggest group yet to the Netherlands. The tournament is a fantastic celebration of sport, community and international spirit. The parade, which takes place on the first night is a real spectacle, with officers in full uniform and the chance to meet and get to know people from all over the world. It reinforces the idea of breaking down barriers and helping others, which is at the heart at what we do in these professions.”

PC Dean Reynolds, who will compete in the Men’s team, worked at TR Fastenings in Uckfield from 2013-2014 and his mother, Kate Pocock, still works at the Uckfield office as a business development manager. Whilst at TR Fastenings, Dean played for the company’s own five-a-side team and is currently looking to organise a friendly between his current and past teams as a warm up to the tournament, in order to try out the new kits.
