TR Fastenings helps Uckfield student shoot for the stars with NASA trip sponsorship
TR Fastenings (TR), the global fasteners firm in Uckfield, is contributing to a Sussex student’s life-changing trip to NASA’s International Space University in Houston, Texas.
Jake Fisher-Dunford, 15, from Uckfield Community Technology College (UCTC) will travel to the famous space centre in December to attend a week long educational experience. While he is there, he will learn about space travel and rocket science, meet NASA scientists and engineers, go on a tour of the centre’s facilities and have brunch with an astronaut.
Jake, who is in Year 10 at UCTC, was invited to go to Houston after achieving excellent results in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects at the college. Needing to raise £2,500 for the trip, Jake decided to approach local businesses including TR for financial support as well as taking part in the Dunwich Dynamo cycling event to raise sponsorship money. The ride saw Jake travel 200 kilometres (125 miles) at night from London Fields in Hackney to Dunwich on the Suffolk coast.
He said: “This is such an amazing opportunity and I was determined to raise the money to make it happen. I approached TR because they are well known for their success in the manufacturing and engineering industry in Uckfield and around the world. I have offered to work at TR during the summer as a thank you for their donation and I’m looking forward to seeing how the business operates, before heading off to America. I can’t wait to visit NASA, and I’m very excited about what I’ll see and learn when I’m there.”
Geoff Budd, European Managing Director of TR Fastenings, commented: “Supporting the next generation of engineers and scientists is a cause very close to our hearts and we think it’s fantastic that Jake has been offered the chance to travel to Houston, where we are sure he will have a hugely rewarding and inspiring experience. It’s vital that businesses encourage and nurture young people to excel in STEM subjects and we are very pleased to be helping Jake on his way to NASA.”
TR has pledged this support just months after it was announced the company will supply essential rivets and tools for the new NASA Mars Exploration Rover, scheduled to leave for space in 2020.
